AYUSH treatment claim rejected? Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy cover explained

Treatment under AYUSH systems is part of standard health cover, but it comes with conditions that insurers often use to refuse claims.

Quick answer

IRDAI’s standard terms include in-patient treatment under the AYUSH systems (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy), up to the sum insured, when it is taken in a hospital or day care centre that meets the policy’s definition. Common reasons for refusal are that the facility is not recognised, the treatment was not in-patient, or the admission was for wellness or rejuvenation rather than a diagnosed condition. Check your policy’s AYUSH wording, get the facility’s registration and the doctor’s diagnosis and prescription, and send a grievance if the refusal does not fit those terms.

What AYUSH cover usually requires

  • In-patient admission, with a discharge summary and bills.
  • A diagnosed condition treated by a qualified AYUSH practitioner.
  • A hospital or day care centre that meets the policy’s definition, typically a recognised or registered facility with the required staff and facilities.
  • Treatment within the sum insured and any sub-limit your policy states.

Why these claims are refused

Reason givenWhat to check
Facility not recognisedAsk for the exact recognition criteria in your policy. Get the facility’s registration certificate.
Wellness or rejuvenation, not treatmentGet a diagnosis, treatment plan and the practitioner’s certificate that the admission was for a medical condition.
Outpatient treatmentShow admission and discharge records. OPD is generally not covered without an OPD benefit.
Sub-limit or exclusionRead your policy’s AYUSH clause. A cap is a different ground from a refusal.
