Room Rent Proportionate Deduction Calculator

Stayed in a costlier room than your policy allows? See how much a proportionate deduction can legitimately reduce, and how much you can dispute if medicines, consumables or implants were cut too.

Your claim

Many policies state a % of sum insured or a room type. Convert it to a daily rupee amount.

Doctor visits, nursing and some procedure or OT fees, if the hospital prices them by room.

Medicines, consumables, implants, medical devices and most diagnostics.

Proportionate ratio

50.0%

Your room cost more than the limit, so an insurer may apply this ratio (₹5,000 ÷ ₹10,000) to room-linked charges.

Room rent the insurer should pay

₹15,000

Excess room rent you bear: ₹15,000

Cut a proportionate ratio may reach

₹30,000

On room-linked charges only, if the hospital prices them by room.

Amount to dispute if these were also reduced

₹45,000

IRDAI’s rules say proportionate deduction should not be applied to pharmacy, consumables, implants, medical devices or diagnostics. If your settlement letter reduced those items, this is the amount to ask back.

How this estimate works

The ratio is your eligible room rent divided by the room rent actually charged. Insurers may apply it to charges that change with the room category. IRDAI’s Master Circular on Health Insurance Business (2024) says it cannot be applied to expenses that do not vary with the room, or in hospitals that do not follow differential billing.

This is an estimate for planning your grievance, not a settlement figure and not legal advice. Your policy wording, any ICU limits and the hospital’s own tariff decide the exact numbers. Read the full explanation in our guide to room rent proportionate deduction.
